Formatting Guidelines
Each wiki page consists of: an introduction; a table of contents; section headings; body text; external links; and reference footnotes. Please follow these formatting guidelines when adding new material to an existing wiki page or creating a new one.
- Introduction: Each wiki page should start with a brief introduction of one to three paragraphs summarizing the topic.
- Table of Contents: Each page that contains more than an introduction needs a table of contents. The wiki software automatically generates one, you just need to place it on the page using a special tag. After the introduction, type [ toc ], so that there are no spaces between the brackets and "toc." This will automatically create a table of contents based on your section headings, if the headings are formatted properly. If you see this special tag on an existing page, it is very important not to delete it.
- Section headers: To create a section header, type the title, then highlight it. Go to the "Format" dropdown list on the editing toolbar. Select "Heading 2" for main section titles, and "Heading 3" for sub-section titles. No other headings will work. Only sections titles formatted "Heading 2" or "Heading 3" will appear in the table of contents.
- Horizontal line: Insert a horizontal line under each heading. Place the mouse cursor next to the section heading and click the "Insert Horizontal Line" button.
- Footnotes: It is very important that each fact within the wiki be footnoted. The wiki software automatically displays footnotes at the bottom of the page if you follow proper formatting. To insert a footnote, place your cursor at the end of the sentence and type [ fn ] (with no spaces between the brackets and "fn"), then type your footnote text, followed by [ /fn ] (with no spaces between the brackets and "/fn"). You do not need to include a footnote number.

- External links: Please do not put links to external sites within the body text of a wiki page. External links should only be placed in the "external links" section of each page. To create an external link, highlight the text you want to turn into a link and click the link button in the editing toolbar, and enter the URL.
- Tables: To create a table, click the "Insert/Edit Table" button. It will give you options for how many rows and columns you want, as well as how large you want your table to be. Then, simply insert your information. Remember to title your table, adding a footnote if necessary, and give a source under the table.
- Lists: To create a list, click the "Insert/Remove Bulleted List" button.
